Honoring the Modern Day Heroes
Truly, not all heroes wear capes. Some wear buri hats, tangled clothes, bare feets, ready to face the scorching heat, and pouring rain weathers. There's also these people in uniforms, ready to uplift their duty for the public. Just to bravely serve the Filipinos in this emerging economy. With no certainty on their future endeavors, with earning profits that cannot suffice their needs and debts, these modern day heroes still stand strong despite the odds.
Farmers
Manong Vicente Andrade, a local farmer currently residing in Lomboy, Panay, Capiz has been a farmer for 35 years. He started his farming life at an early age, with no proper education,he developed his own farming skills from his Father who taught him and is also a well known rice farmer in the area. From merely helping, with his dirty hands and soaked feet in the muddy fields, to having a never ending willingness to learn, he is now currently yielding a one and a half hectares crop of rice, to sustain his needs, alongside with his old mother and a sister, who relies on him most of the time. Showing a great result of the soil he cultivated on his own. With barely money earned, in this stagnant economy, he still sticks to his farming job no matter what's the downside of it, since it is the only proficient way he can earn a living.
He is just one of the people who's the backbone of the society, but yet still left unappreciated. They provide most of the essential needs that a person could've had as their necessities, such as food, and other raw materials. They nourish the gift of nature, without destroying any of it. But despite their perseverance they're still the ones who got less recognition from the people. They are not merely there just to earn, but to serve the country in their own unique way.
Workers
Mr. Nilo Balgos, a DPWH Maintenance Worker of 14 years. His job was mainly to repair road cracks, repaint vanishing road lines and establish road signs, so others wouldn't get lost along the way. But his job doesn't end at that, in every calamity, especially typhoons, he and his co-workers also act as rescuers, saving people who are stuck in high floods, and unable to cross boundaries, giving them free lift, and bringing to them to their wished destination, which is more work than he signed up for. But despite that, he still chose to remain in the same government agency, even earning less from his work, and always getting paid late. With his little family of four, Mr. Balgos always makes ends meet.
His one of a kind determination, earns him a spot, alongside other working people who keep the society in function. They are mostly the people who run most of the errands that maintain the smooth flow of tasks within a country. There's also these people who are willing to risk their lives for others, like the Police and the Military. While some are ready to commit to putting their knowledge into action just to save the lives of others, these include our Doctors, Nurses and other people that work in the same field. But, regardless of the profession they have, whether in public or private branches, they still must be remembered, not because of their job, but because of their efforts, that makes them honorable.
In the end, real heroes aren't just the ones who are engraved in the minds of people, due to their bravery in shifting the history of Filipinos — fighting for revolution and change, just for us to successfully taste the freedom that we have right now. Yes, indeed they are to be honored, above anything else, but let's also remember those who serve us right now in the shadows.Their hard work is just like that of our National Heroes — “Para sa Bayan” — for the country, that's why they also deserve our full recognition.
